Story

Our StoryUrbanadd is a Seattle-based architecture, planning and interior design firm that serves clients throughout North America. We specialize in manufacturing, commercial, adaptive-reuse, retail/banking and civic projects as well as distilleries and breweries. Our team has designed world-class projects while working at some the West Coast’s largest firms, but founded Urbanadd in 2008 to practice differently – smaller, more collaborative, and with a lot more fun.

While every project in our office is different, the common thread is our enthusiasm and stewardship of our clients’ goals. We take responsibility and ownership to ensure that our role as stewards comes through – for the environment, for the budget, and for our clients’ vision. We’re passionate about what we do, every day, with our clients. And we want that excitement to be contagious, to spread through the team and the community to help cultivate better built environments.

How we approach our work:

smart questions, rigorous testing.

Needs and aspirations… Theories and technologies… Schedules and budgets. Channeling these into appropriate and exciting places is what we do.

We begin by exploring a multitude of ideas and possibilities – ensuring the best design ideas evolve into your project. Evaluating their strengths and weaknesses is our strength, all the while gathering feedback from the team. This collaborative and proactive approach has been proven again and again.

CONTEXTUAL THINKING

Our work is highly contextual. We work hard to ensure our projects tell good stories and complement their surroundings. From distilleries and residences to banks and offices, every project is carefully and thoughtfully integrated into the existing condition.

EXPERT ALLIANCES

We don’t claim to know everything, so we partner with other experts on your behalf: lean manufacturing consultants, historic preservation consultants, MEP and structural engineers, civil engineers, landscape architects, and acousticians, to name a few.

QUIET ARCHITECTURE

Being Modernists at heart, we are drawn to simple, elegant aesthetics and honest materiality. We think that great architectural spaces should receive a person, should enable them to experience it, but should not constantly beg for their attention.

We’re passionate about getting the most out of life . . . and we carry that zeal into our work. Our brains are more engaged, creative, productive, and resilient when we’re in a positive state. So it’s important for us to connect with our clients, colleagues and partners on a human level – to collaborate with people we enjoy working and spending time with.

Just as important is our commitment to the causes that inspire us. Both in the nature of our work itself and in our philanthropic efforts, we strive towards goals that include:

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

Buildings are deeply implicated in the consumption of our limited natural resources. Through elegant design and innovative problem solving,  facilities can consume less and last longer, providing exemplary performance and longevity.

URBAN VIBRANCE

Density offers hope: In order to sustain precious natural ecosystems beyond the limits of cities, we need to concentrate on density inside those boundaries. Smart design and intelligent growth yields vibrant urban centers where we want to live, work and play.

BALANCE

Working hard for our clients focuses our energy. Playing hard recharges our batteries. From our Urbanadd Racing pursuits in biking, sailing and triathlons, to varied community activities, we know that balancing work with our life goals leads to a better design practice.
